Donald Earl Barnes, 70, Albert Lea

The funeral service for Donald Earl Barnes will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 21, 2003, at Salem Lutheran Church, Albert Lea. The Rev. Jay Dahlvang will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today, March 20, at Bonnerup Funeral Service and one hour before the service at the church. Military honors will be accorded by the Albert Lea Veterans’ Organizations.
Donald died at his home on Tuesday, March 18, 2003. He was 70 years old.
Donald was born in Fairmont on June 17, 1932, the son of James and Bessie (Brownlee) Barnes. He attended rural schools near Fairmont and Hartland.
Donald served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952. He received the Korean Service Medal with Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and the United Nations Service Medal.
On Feb. 7, 1954, Donald was united in marriage with Shirley Cornelius at Salem Lutheran Church. They were members of Salem Lutheran Church, where Donald had been active in the dartball league and serving as usher.
Donald had worked for Queen Stove for 36 years, Lou-Rich, and Minnesota Corrugated Box company. Following his retirement, he volunteered as a school crossing guard and for the Bike-a-thon. His interests included hunting, woodworking, traveling, and he was particularly fond of spending time with his grandchildren.
Donald is survived by three daughters: Pam (Larry) Minear of Emmons, Diane (Dale) Marquardt of Albert Lea, and Jody Bump of Northwood, Iowa; four grandchildren: Darin Halstead and his special friend, Darla, Breanna Marquardt, and Nicole and Natasha Bump, all of Albert Lea; one great-grandson, Jerry Michael Halstad; one niece, Carol (Jim) Schaub of Northwood; two nephews: Butch and Michael Lyons of California; two great-nephews: Danny (Janice) Guckenburg and Troy (Anna) Guckenburg, all of Arizona; one great-great-nephew, Josh Guckenburg of Arizona; and very close friend, Gary Graham of Albert Lea.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley in 2001; sister, Maude Lyons; and one brother in infancy.
