Lynn Vandenheuvel is thankful the people of Freeborn County have given so much to make Arc Freeborn County a success.

Arc Freeborn County is an organization that helps people with mental retardation and other disabilities. It lets them live more independently, instead of living in an institution.

Vandenheuvel began volunteering when her son was 5 years old in 1966. Her son, Terry, was born with Down syndrome.

Vandenheuvel volunteers with the many fund-raising events that Arc holds, like the bowl-a-thon and pancake breakfasts.

Vandenheuvel holds a special place in her heart for the people she works with through Arc.

&uot;The joy of watching and working with them, it’s a blessing to me,&uot; she said. &uot;They’re special people.&uot;

She also knows the work Arc does is making these people’s lives better.

&uot;They’re so happy and appreciative,&uot; she said. &uot;I feel we do a great job.&uot;

Vandenheuvel credits the generous people of Freeborn County with giving people, like her son Terry, the chance to live more independently. Arc, a United Way agency, receives no federal funding and relies on donations.

Terry Vandenheuvel also volunteers at Arc. He folds the more than 400 newsletters Arc sends our regularly.
