GLENVILLE &045; Despite a season full of injuries and illnesses that saw a nine-person roster completely intact for only three games, the Glenville-Emmons B-squad girls’ basketball team recently completed its season with a 10-8 mark, including a Southeast Conference record of 9-4.
“I was really proud of the fight the girls gave each game, many times with only seven players,” noted third-year coach Tom Jones. “We liked to full-court press and it made for some awfully tired athletes at the end of each game.&uot;
The team swept Lyle-Pacelli, Grand Meadow, Lanesboro and LeRoy-Ostrander along with wins over Houston and Medford.
According to Jones, the team had three season highlights.
The first was a 10-point, come-from-behind victory over Medford when the Wolverines’ point guard fouled out in the third quarter.
“Everyone picked up their game a notch and helped get the ball up court and we got the win,” said Jones.
The others were a very hard fought, physical win after a long bus ride to Houston, and a season-ending victory over Lanesboro on parents night.
“The Lanesboro win was special,&uot; said Jones. &uot;Because of the game getting postponed due to weather at the end of the season, it didn’t look like it would be made up. When the girls found out we would get another chance to play they were ready. They executed a perfect game plan in route to a 48-20 victory.&uot;
For the season the team averaged 38.5 points per game, while holding the opponents to 29.8. The team shot 36 percent from the field.
“With such a small roster, everyone got extensive playing time, which will pay big dividends for our five sophomores as they enter varsity play next year as well as for our four freshman as they return for another year on the B-Squad,” said Jones.
Team members include sophomores Amanda Weiss, Rhonda Watson, Amanda Epland, Samantha Stadheim, Stephanie Peterson and freshmen Kristen Leonhardi, Chelsey Ziebell, Kristine Yost and Alicia Reyerson. The student managers were Jessica Williamson and Jessica Boyum.
