50 years ago — 1961

Named to the Southland All-Conference football team from Glenville High School was Harlan Nelson, Glen Jensen, Harry Anderson, Doug Cipra and Mike Fergeson, and from Lyle was Galen Lehnhardt, Tony Schaufenbil and Albem Slinde.

The Albert Lea High School basketball team opened practice with six returning letterwinners. They were Gary Jacobsen, Ralph Summers, Clair Flaten, John Jensen, Dave Boyum and Lowell Syverson.

Returning letter winners for the Albert Lea wrestling team were Jeff Brooke, Bruce Palmer, Roger Kittelson, Dan Jahns, Paul Hansen, Pete Fabry, Byron Boer and Mike Callahan.

25 years ago — 1986

In the semifinals of the Minnesota State Class A Nine-Man football tournament, Alden-Conger lost to Silver Lake 43-28. Quarterback Kevin Newman completed 23-of-32 passes for 265 yards for the Blackhawks.

Named to the All-Border League Volleyball Team from Alden-Conger were Deb Coughlin, Kim Gaard and Ann Bleckeberg. From South Central were Kim Peterson and Kay Molskness. Grom Emmons were Heidi Shaw and Scheila Peterson. From Freeborn were Teresa Schuster and Jolene Ignaszewski; from Delavan was Laura Mura. From Lyle was Carrie Truckenmiller; from Elmore was Maria Morgan.

The 17th-ranked Michigan Wolverine football team was upset by the Minnesota Gophers 20-17 on a field goal by Chip Lohmiller as time ran out.

 

10 years ago — 2001

Named to the Albert Lea Tribune All-Area volleyball first team from Albert Lea was Jenny Vanderploeg; from Lake Mills were Jill Helgeson, Katy Kingland and Katie Pederson; from New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva was Erin Anderson; from United South Central was Nichole Fulton. Named to the second team from ALHS was Beth Kolling; from Lake Mills was Kelsey Christianson; from NRHEG were Kelli Schlaak and Elizabeth Schultz; from Glenville-Emmons were Megan Avery and Alisa Rayman.

The Albert Lea girls’ hockey team lost their season opener 5-2 to Mankato East. The Tigers had no seniors on the team.
