Larson Manufacturing lays off workers

LAKE MILLS, Iowa — Larson Manufacturing reduced its workforce this month at its Lake Mills and Clear Lake locations by 68.

Some of the reduction came through voluntary resignations and through relocations. Most came through layoffs Thursday, the majority of which were in Clear Lake but many in Lake Mills, too.

The move comes as the largest maker of storm doors and windows in the United States consolidates its Clear Lake and Lake Mills manufacturing plants.

Larson Manufacturing said the Lake Mills plant is newer, has up-to-date technology and a greater manufacturing capacity.

“This was a tough decision for us because of the impact to our employees, but one that we know is needed to strengthen our company for the future,” said Jeff Rief, president and CEO of Larson Manufacturing, in a press release.

“We operate in a highly competitive environment and must continually improve our manufacturing effectiveness to ensure we bring the best value to the marketplace.”

The news release said some hiring is coming: “As part of its operational plan, Larson expects to add 50 employees to the remaining sites to maintain its current production levels.”

The Lake Mills Chamber of Commerce is closed this week and could not be reached for comment.
