Editorial: Action needed soon on old high school

The Albert Lea community is proud of the grand old &uot;Cap&uot; Emmons auditorium that sits unused as part of the vacant former Albert Lea High School complex, and rightfully so. Its large seating capacity alone makes it unique, and many naturally have a sentimental attachment to it.
The efforts of one local group should be an indicator that many residents are willing to do anything they can to help ensure the auditorium survives. That should be a good sign for the old high school’s owner, who so far hasn’t come up with a concrete plan for any part of the old school &045; at least not one he’s shared with Albert Lea.
Senior housing has been discussed for parts of the building, and if that can work, it seems like a nice match. Other parts of the building, including the auditorium, are better suited for other uses. Some have mentioned a convention center. It’s a nice thought that would require some study before it could become a plan.
Having so much local support for a project can only be a good thing. The local group that has taken an active interest in the school issue could be a resource and an asset for owner Ed Rymer if he chooses to pursue a project involving the auditorium. But time is not anybody’s friend in this situation. The old school is only going to deteriorate the longer it sits unused. Every harsh winter will take its toll. If something is going to happen, it needs to happen soon.
