Forest A. Smith, 95, Albert Lea

The funeral service for Forest A. Smith of Albert Lea, formerly of Truman and Winnebago, Minn., will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at the Bonnerup Funeral Service Chapel in Albert Lea. The Rev. Clayton Balsley will officiate. Interment will be in the Nashville Cemetery, rural Truman, at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at the Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea, and one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Forest died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at St. John’s Lutheran Home in Albert Lea where he had been a resident for the past several days. He was 95.

He was born on Jan. 13, 1908, at home in Nashville Center, Nashville Township, Minn., the son of Loren &uot;Del&uot; and Elnora Delila &uot;Lila&uot; (Hall) Smith. He graduated from Winnebago High School in the spring of 1925. He entered Macalester College in the fall of 1926, graduating in 1930. Following graduation he served as principal for Truman schools and also taught the sciences there for several years.

He married Ruth Maurine Rorman on Sept. 24, 1932, in Madelia. In 1936, Forest and his family moved to Pemberton where he became the principal and taught at Pemberton High School, a position he held for six years.

In the summer of 1941, moved to his farm, nearly a mile north of his father’s homestead and farmed the rest of his working life. A farmer at heart, Forest farmed for more than 31 years. In his later years he lived in Winnebago and wintered in Arizona.

In 1997 Forest moved to Albert Lea to be closer to his daughters. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Albert Lea where he attended Bible study, and sang in the church choir. In his earlier years he sang in several accomplished groups. In his later years he took up the hobby of crocheting. He also enjoyed music and bird watching. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by three daughters: Joanne and her husband Marvin Miller of Albert Lea, Darline and her husband Allan Jensen of Clarks Grove, and Lynda and her husband Morland &uot;Gus&uot; Goskeson of Albert Lea; grandchildren: Brad Miller and his wife Jodi and their children, Alex, Dayton, Collin and Gabrielle, of Rochester, Bethany and her husband Tom Sawina of Daytona Beach, Fla., Diane and her husband Bryan Brighton and their children, Aurie, Keegan, and Hope, of Plainview, Minn., Judy and her husband Tad Lunning of Albert Lea, Mark Goskeson of Albert Lea, and Lori Goskeson of Mankato; and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth Maurine, in 1970; a sister, Lura Canon; and two brothers: Harold and Paul Smith.
