Weekend planner: Fund raising, arts and theater this weekend

A benefit for Marlyene Picha, who is receiving a kidney transplant, will be held Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Union Center.

A pancake breakfast, featuring Dennis Brue’s award-winning pancakes, will be served from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Freewill donations will be accepted. There will also be an auction starting at noon and a bake sale running throughout the benefit.

Some of the auction items include quilts, Timberwolves and Minnesota Wild tickets, a two-for-one cruise, Cabela’s items, hotel packages and more.

Proceeds will help defray medical expenses.

Donations, payable to the Marlyene Picha Benefit, may also be sent to Trades & Labor Credit Union, 610 S. Broadway Ave., Albert Lea.

Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.

Friday, Feb. 14

– The wood show continues at the Albert Lea Art Center. Gallery hours are from noon-4 p.m. Exhibiting are Bonnie Felt, Julie Sorenson, Jon Bera, Dean Honsey, Luis Chamizo, Ed and Cathy Cook and family, and Vern Breamer. Admission is free, but donations are accepted to help defray art center expenses.

– Wa-tan-ye Service Club will hold its annual rummage sale from 5-8 p.m. at Northbridge Mall. The club’s popular dishcloths will be available for purchase.

– Albert Lea Community Theatre presents the romantic comedy, &uot;Talley’s Folly.&uot; Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. For ticket information, call 377-4371.

Saturday, Feb. 15

– Wa-tan-ye Service Club will hold its annual rummage sale from 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. at Northbridge Mall. The club’s popular dishcloths will be available for purchase.

Sunday, Feb. 16

– A pancake and sausage breakfast, cooked by the Bricelyn Firefighters and Rescue Squad, and served by Prairie River Camp volunteers, will be served from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Bricelyn Elementary School. Freewill donations will be received. Matching funds will be provided by Modern Woodmen. Proceeds will go to Prairie River Camp water and septic system needs.

– The House of Hope will hold a volunteer appreciation open house from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at 310 E. Clark St. Coffee, cider and refreshments will be served.

– The Albert Lea, Waseca and Wells councils of the Knights of Columbus will hold their annual Valentine’s dance from 3-7 p.m. at the New Richland Legion Hall. Lunch will be available. Modern, country western and old-time music will be provided by the Blue Banners Band. The public is invited.
