Kopischke cooks during blood drives

Ethel Mae Kopischke has become somewhat of a staple at Albert Lea American Red Cross blood drives for the last couple of decades.

Kopischke works in the kitchen during the blood drives, feeding the different workers and volunteers. She said it is her job to make sure the food is warm and that there is silverware available.

Kopischke has worked at blood drives since 1964, and for the last 20 years she has worked every single drive. She works the drives from the moment they open to the moment they close, every day.

&uot;I just feel good, so I work all day,&uot; she said.

Kopischke looks forward to the drives now for something to get her out of the house and into the community. She retired from her job a few years ago.

Blood drives are held every 56 days, which amounts to five times a year. Three of the drives are for three days, while the other two are for one day only. Kopischke has no plans on slowing down anytime soon.

“As long as I can do it, I will,” she said. “Unless I’m dead, then I’ll have to send an excuse.”

Kopischke, who has lived in Albert Lea since 1948, enjoys the people she works with and the companionship that comes along with it.

“I enjoy the people immensely,” she said.
