The Blue Rink at the City Arena will be dedicated on Thursday to longtime Albert Lea boys’ hockey coach Roy Nystrom.
The rink will be renamed Roy Nystrom Arena prior to the Tigers boys’ hockey team’s season opener with the unveiling of two new signs. The Tigers are slated to face Northfield at 7 p.m. and the dedication will take place following the junior varsity game, as early as 6:30 p.m.
The new signs, which will read “Roy Nystrom Arena,” will be placed near the enterance of the rink and a 24-by-3 sign will be placed above the windows of the arena’s upstairs lounge. The signs were constructed by Ad-Art and are in the Tigers’ team colors: cherry and blue.
Nystrom is entering his 39th season as the Tigers head coach and has a 633-416-19 career record. Nystrom moved to fourth all-time nationally in boys’ hockey coaching wins with a 7-4 win at Rochester John Marshall on Dec. 7, 2010. He also has more wins than anyone who’s coached boys’ hockey in Minnesota.
