GLENVILLE &045; A week ago, the Glenville-Emmons Wolverines had a chance to knock off one of the better girls’ basketball teams in the Southeast Conference.

This time, they did it.

The Wolverines, who fell short on the road against Spring Grove, rallied past Mabel-Canton 35-28 in a defensive battle at Glenville Friday night.

&uot;The kids really executed well tonight,&uot; said Wolverines coach Lisa Ziebell. &uot;They stuck with the game plan and worked well together as a team. The girls wanted this game. It’s a big conference win.&uot;

It improved the Wolverines’ record to 4-1 in the conference. They’re 4-4 overall.

A couple keys to the game, according to Ziebell, were free throws and rebounding. They made 14 of 17 at the line, 82 percent.

&uot;I was real proud of the girls tonight at the free-throw line,&uot; said Ziebell. &uot;It’s not too often we get to shoot 17. Tonight when we did get to the line, we took advantage of it.&uot;

And they took control on the boards.

&uot;Coming off a game where we didn’t rebounding well, we did a good job there tonight too,&uot; said Ziebell.

After trailing 5-2 at the end of the first quarter, the Wolverines took a 15-11 advantage at halftime. They took a 23-21 edge into the fourth period.

Sara Greibrok led the Wolverines with 10 points, six rebounds and three steals.

&uot;She really stepped up to her capability tonight,&uot; said Ziebell. &uot;At the end, when we needed to score some baskets, she stepped right up and took them.&uot;

Jenna Brackey had eight points and five steals, Alisa Rayman six points, 11 rebounds and three assists, Katie Brackey two points and four assists. LeAnn Chessmore contributed five points, Megan Bjorklund two.

The Wolverines are off until Monday, Jan. 6, when they host Medford.
