The funeral service for Carl Oliver Flattum will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, at Silver Lake Lutheran Church, rural Northwood, Iowa. The Rev. Steve Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Silver Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bonnerup Funeral Service, and one hour before the service at the church. Military honors will be accorded by the Albert Lea Veterans’ Organization.

Carl died on Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center, Albert Lea. He was 73 years old.

Carl was born on March 17, 1929, in rural Northwood, Iowa, the son of John Alvin and Anna (Anderson) Flattum. He attended Silver Lake #6 rural school.

During the Korean War he served with the U.S. Army from 1951-1952. He received the Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and United Nations Service Medal. He was a member of the Lake Mills and Emmons American Legion.

During his life, Carl had worked at various jobs &045; truck driver for Hartland Creamery, backhoe work for Roy Bjorklund, house moving and remodeling for Lynn Skellenger, drove truck for Larson Manufacturing in Lake Mills, Iowa, worked several years for Knutson and Oline John Deere dealership in Emmons, and for the past 20 years he had worked for his brother at Art Flattum Salvage.

Carl’s hobbies included riding motorcycles, doing mechanical work and attending farm auctions.

Carl is survived by two brothers and two sisters: Josephine (Harold) Sherwood of Lake Mills, Iowa, Gladys (Ralph) Sabin of Albert Lea, George (Sadie) Flattum of Albert Lea, Arthur (Debora) Flattum of Albert Lea; nieces and nephews: Kevin (Amy) Flattum and their children, Brennan and Sage of Alden, Connie (Mike) Lillabridge of Conger, Kelly (Nancy) Flattum and their children, Melaina, Brooke, and Jordan of Waseca, John Flattum and his children, Jennifer and Cory of Albert Lea, Terri Marpe and her children, Nicole, Mollie and Andrew of Albert Lea, Michael (Terese) Flattum and their children, Samantha and Derek of Lakeville, Minn., Jeffery (Crystal) Flattum and their children, Noah and Maxwell of Rosemount, Minn., Robert Sabin and his children, Brett (Sandra) Sabin and Tyler of Albert Lea, Beverly Nelson and her children, Roger (Barbara) Nelson and their children, Dominick, Samantha, and Katriel of Rochester, Tina (Malt) Katusky and their children, Miranda, Amber, and Angelique of Austin, Donald Sabin of Albert Lea, James Sabin and his daughter, Jacqueline of Emmons, DeAnn (Morris) Bronson and their children, Matt, Timmy, and Josh of Alden, David (April) Sherwood and their daughter, Courtney, of Rockwell, Iowa, Julie Sherwood and her son, Clancy, of Forest City, Iowa, Harlan Sherwood of Minneapolis, Paul Sherwood of Joice, Iowa, and Fern (Robert) Zabel and their children, Andrew and Joshua, of Lake Mills, Iowa.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Orville.
