50 years ago – 1952
The Harlem Globetrotters defeated an all-star team from Albert Lea, 67-47. Leading scorers for Albert Lea were
Bumper” Westrum with 14 points and &uot;Rabbit” Nelson with 12 points.
Named to the Border League all-conference football team from Alden were Jerry Dohmeier at end, Roland Hanson at guard, Jack Gable at tackle and Merlyn Petersen at halfback.
Six players from Wells High School were named to the All-Middle Six Conference football team. They were Dean Brown, Marv Schultz, Dale Yonkey, Frank Doyle, Gordon Graham and Dave Anderson.
25 years ago – 1977
Named to the AII-Big Nine Conference football team from Albert Lea were Jeff White, Jay Rasmussen, Steve Curry, Bill Mittelstad and Keith McDonald.
Second baseman Rod Carew of the Minnesota Twins was named the American League’s Most Valuable Player. He won his sixth AL batting title with a .386 average.
Named to the Gopher League All-Conference volleyball team from Ellendale-Geneva were Sue Cornelius, Cindy Sloan, Julie Vanden Heuvel and Jeanette Wayne, from New Richland-Hartland was Ann Smith and from Glenville was Karol Hansen.
Albert Lea defeated Mankato West 95.80 to 95.04 in boys’ gymnastics. Albert Lea winners were Doug Anderson in the floor exercise and the parallel bars, Mike Tolzman on the high bars and all-around and Phil Kouba in vaulting.
10 years ago – 1992
Dennis Eckersly won the American League MVP and Cy Young Award. He won seven games with only one loss and had a 1.91 ERA. He totaled 306 points for MVP, followed by Kirby Puckett of the Twins with 209 points.
The United South Central High School volleyball team was defeated by Tracy-Milroy 14-16, 4-15, 15-3, 15-4 and 15-5 to finish second in Class A at the state High tournament. The Rebels finished the season with a 26-4 record.
Jeff Erdman of NRHEG was named the Albert Lea Tribune Football Coach of the Year and Terry Truebenbach of NRHEG was named the Football Player of the Year.
