Throughout regulation play, the Albert Lea High School girls’ soccer team pounded the ball at the Winona goal but had nothing to show for it.
The Tigers made sure it didn’t happen in overtime.
Albert Lea scored twice in the 10-minute extra session and shut out Winona 2-0 in the final game of the regular season at Hammer Field Saturday.
“It was a nice way to finish the season,” said coach Todd Lange. “It’s too bad the girls had to wait that long to score, but it worked out great.”
It improved the Tigers’ record to 10-4-3 overall and 8-2-3 in the Big Nine, ensuring them of second place in the conference.
Albert Lea had many scoring opportunities throughout the game, outshooting the Winhawks 28-7 in regulation.
“We were playing well, controlling the ball well, but we couldn’t get anything in the net,” said Lange.
That changed 3:30 into overtime, when Laura Hillman scored on an assist from Katie Stenseth.
Less than two minutes later, Amy Ravenhorst scored on a header off a Hillman corner kick.
Liz Reynen registered the shutout for the Tigers, her sixth of the season.
Also playing well, according to Lange, were Brittany Arendt, Stacie Armstrong, Stenseth, Brie Woitas and Amy Marka.
“Our defense didn’t have to work too hard, which was good,” said Lange.
The Albert Lea junior varsity tied Winona 2-2. Kelly Cook and Mary Cook scored for the locals.
The Tigers open section tournament play Saturday, probably with a home game. Seedings are expected tonight.
