Albert Lea cruised in triangular
The Albert Lea wrestling team kept its impressive start to the season going on Friday with a sweep of a triangular in Farmington.
The Tigers beat Farmington 58-10 before making a statement with a 51-18 with over No. 10-ranked Anoka.
The Tigers are now 7-0 this season with three wins over ranked opponents.
“I’m really pleased with the way the kids are wrestling right now,” Tigers coach Larry Goodnature said. “We’re just so aggressive and not satisfied with just winning. The kids are doing what they need to do to get the bonus points.”
Albert Lea’s 120-pounder, Garrett Wangsness, and 182-pounder, Dalton Westerlund, both recorded falls in each of their matches. Trevor Westerlund, Dakota Wangsness, Devin Nelson, Lucas Hansen and Andy Borland also in the triangular.
Hable wrestled a strong match against Anoka’s 170-pounder, Kyle Begin, the defending state champion who’s currently ranked No. 1 in the state. Hable, who’s ranked No. 5 at 160 pounds, lost a 7-4 decision.
“It was an excellent match,” Goodnature said. “He wrestled him solid.”
Goodnature also commended the wrestling of Dalton, Tristan and Trevor Westerlund, the Westerlunds, Bany Chan and Lucas Hansen.
“We’re wrestling as a team,” Goodnature said. “Everybody’s doing their part. We’re going out there and getting the job done.”
Goodnature said he’s pleased with the team’s aggressive approach especially with their biggest regular season match coming up. No. 6-ranked Albert Lea at No. 8 Owatonna at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
“We’re wrestling well right now, and I like that going into a big match,” Goodnature said. “Hopefully we can just keep it up for next week.”
