Tigers make jump in latest rankings

The Albert Lea wrestling team jumped up the Class AAA state rankings on Friday following an impressive start to the season.

The Tigers beat two ranked teams in the season’s opening weekend, including fifth-ranked Coon Rapids, and moved from No. 9 to 6 in the latest rankings released by the Guillotine.com.

New Section 1AAA foe Hastings stayed idle at No. 3 despite a loss to Coon Rapids, and Owatonna fell from No. 6 to 8 following a 9-0 start to the year. The Tigers will look to knock off its fourth ranked opponent when it wrestles at Owatonna at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Individually, the Tigers saw two of its wrestlers move up the rankings and two fall.

At 120 pounds, Dakota Wangsness dropped from fifth in the preseason rankings to eighth, and 132-pounder Lucas Hansen fell from No. 7 to 8. At 106 pounds, Trevor Westerlund moved up one spot from No. 8 to 7, and his cousin, 170-pounder Dalton Westerlund, the Tigers’ highest-ranked wrestler, moved from fourth to third in the state.

At 160 pounds, Trey Hable stayed idle.
