CLEVELAND &045; It was one of the few area towns to avoid rain Friday night, but it doesn’t mean the homecoming spirits were not dampened for the Cleveland Clippers.

The Glenville-Emmons Wolverines made sure of that.

The Wolverines overcame a 26-7 fourth-quarter deficit and won 28-26, their first victory of the season and first for new head coach Ryan Wangen.

&uot;The guys kept playing hard,&uot; said Wangen. &uot;We talked about for every one big play they get, we needed two big plays. The guys didn’t flinch. They just kept pushing through right to the end and got the victory.&uot;

They also got a big game from Kris Knutson, who scored three touchdowns and ran for 101 yards on 22 carries. He led the Wolverines defensively with 16 tackles and a blocked PAT kick.

Quarterback Mike Yocom completed eight of 19 passes for 112 yard, with no interceptions.

Yocom also ran 10 times for 85 yards. Eli Riggle had five pass receptions for 79 yards.

The Clippers started strong, taking a 14-0 lead before the Wolverines got on the board in the second quarter on a 6-yard run by Knutson. Tim Westland kicked the PAT, his first of four.

The Wolverines appeared to tie it just before halftime on a 20-yard pass from Yocom to Jake Hansen, but the touchdown was nullified by a penalty.

&uot;We felt pretty good going into halftime,&uot; said Wangen.

The Clippers, though, tacked on a pair of third-quarter scores to take a 26-7 lead into the fourth.

The Wolverines responded with a pair of scoring drives finished by Knutson.

The final drive began at the G-E 48 with 5:30 remaining. Tony Walk ran the final 15 yards for the touchdown.

Walk finished with 60 yards on nine carries.

Derek Lau had 12 tackles, Walk and Riggle eight each. Hansen, who had two touchdown receptions called back by penalties, registered four tackles and an interception.

Both teams ran their record to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the Southern Confederacy Conference.

The Wolverines host Grand Meadow this Friday.
