Editorial: Local papers are trusted online

The statement “I got it off the Internet” invokes doubts of credibility and accuracy.
The Internet is awash in untruths, suspect information and errors.
However, a recent survey proves what Internet users already know: Newspaper Web sites are the islands of truth and accuracy in the World Wide Web’s sea of falsehoods and schemes.
The survey, conducted by comScore on behalf of the Newspaper Association of America, found newspaper sites are the most-trusted and most-visited source of local news. The results reiterate what other studies of the Internet have found about newspaper sites.
The survey found 57 percent of respondents said their local newspaper’s Web sites were their first stop for local information — more than all other online local news media combined. It found users trusted the news and advertising on local newspaper sites.
Some users go to newspaper sites for local news, others sought sports news, some entertainment and others classifieds.
And the more education and income the respondents had, the more they sought out newspaper sites.
The survey results mean newspaper sites are more popular and more trusted than sites for TV, radio, local bloggers and other online portals combined.
From the results of the survey, it appears advertisers who do select to be on their local newspaper sites in Albert Lea and across the nation are getting a solid deal.
