This weekend offers opportunities to help neighbors. Medical benefits are scheduled to help Justin &uot;Pete&uot; Peterson and Lee Holstad.

The benefit for Holstad, who has terminal cancer, will be from 2-7 p.m. Sunday at the Union Center, 404 E. Main St. There will be a sloppy joe supper and silent auction. Lutheran Brotherhood will match funds. The benefit will help pay medical bills.

The benefit for Peterson, son of Gary and Linda Peterson of Hayward, will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Freeborn-Mower Cooperative Services. There will be a pork dinner, bake sale, silent auction and live auction beginning at 6 p.m.

Peterson was severely injured in a car accident in February. He spent five weeks in intensive care and six weeks in in-patient rehab at St. Marys Hospital. He is paralyzed from the chest down and has only limited use of his hands. Funds are being raised to help cover expenses not covered by insurance and to equip a vehicle for him to drive. Sponsorship includes Lutheran Brotherhood and AAL branches.

Following is a schedule of other events going on this weekend:

Friday, Aug. 9

– The Pelican Breeze will hold a Friday night pizza cruise at 6 p.m. Reservations are required. Call (507) 383-2630.

Saturday, Aug. 10

– The Albert Lea Farmers’ Market will be held in the parking lot at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Water Street beginning at 9 a.m.

– The Pelican Breeze will hold a public cruise at 2 p.m.

Sunday, Aug. 11

– The musical group Family Tradition will present a free concert at the Edgewater Park bandshell beginning at 1:30 p.m. Family Tradition plays old-time waltzes and polkas, country music, gospel tunes and other well-known melodies. The concert is arranged by Albert Lea Local 567 of the American Federation of Musicians as a free community service and is funded by the City of Albert Lea and by the Recording Industries Music Performance Trust Fund.
