Weekend Planner: Festivals, play and more this weekend

This weekend is peppered by local festivals, along with the opening of Minnesota Festival theatre’s last production &uot;Guys and Dolls.&uot;

The musical features a cast of vivid New York characters trying to let love shine through despite some large challenges.

Friday, July 12:

– Activities planned for Lake Mills’ July Jubilee include sidewalk sales, which will be held all day along with the &uot;Big Horn Woods&uot; Rendezvous which continues through Sunday. The Lake Mills Community Preschool and Daycare will sponsor a &uot;Pitchfork Fondue Steak Supper&uot; from 5-7:30 p.m. Cost of the meal is $10 in advance and $11 at the door. There is also a street dance from 8:30-midnight featuring &uot;Nate and the Moonlighters,&uot; a local ’50s and 60s band. Admission is $5, children ages five and under are free, on North Mill Street near Arlington Park.

– Albert Lea Art Center’s Art and Garden tour will feature eight area gardens open from 4-8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at any home on the tour for $8, advance ticket price is $6, available at local businesses.

– The Pelican Breeze will hold a Friday night pizza cruise at 6 p.m. Reservations are required. Call (507) 383-2630.

– MFT’s production of &uot;Guys and Dolls&uot; starts at 7:30 p.m. Individual tickets are on sale for $15, contact the box office at 377-4371 to reserve seats.

Saturday,

July 13:

– Albert Lea Art Center’s Art and Garden tour will feature eight area gardens open from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at any home on the tour for $8, advance ticket price is $6, available at local businesses.

– The Albert Lea Farmers’ Market will be held in the parking lot at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Water Street beginning at 9 a.m.

– The annual MS Walk leaves the Union Center at 10 a.m., walkers are invited to pick up a pledge sheet from the Union Center, call 373-9903 for more information.

– The Pelican Breeze will hold a public cruise at 2 p.m.

– Events scheduled for Hayward Days include: Garage sales through out town starting in the early morning, a bake sale and coffee at Hayward Lutheran starting at 9 a.m. and adult Softball tournaments all day long at Hayward City Park. The Hayward Booster Club’s Food Stand opens at 12 p.m. Under the tent, art activities for children will be open all afternoon. A polka band will entertain from 3-5 p.m. with an auction whose proceeds are going toward Hayward’s Blazing Star Trail project starting at 5 p.m., followed by a drawing for the quilt raffle winner. The street dance next to Uncle Gilby’s Bar will run from 9 p.m.-12:30 a.m. &uot;Copperhead,&uot; a Twin Cities based country-rock band is the featured entertainment for a minimal ($1 or $2) gate fee.

– Events scheduled for the Lake Mills July Jubilee are: &uot;Dad’s Belgian Waffle’s&uot; from 7-9:30 a.m. in the Lake Mills School Foyer, cost is $5. The Kiddie Parade begins at 9:30 a.m. followed by the regular parade at 10:30 a.m. Sand volleyball tournament on North Mill Street near the elevator. A community picnic will be held from 11:30 to 1:00 p.m. along with local entertainment. Antique Tractor Show beginning at 1 p.m. Bingo at 2 p.m. at the Senior Citizen’s Center

from 2-4 p.m.

The grand opening for the new Lake Mills Family Aquatic Center will be held, with a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony held at 2:30 p.m. At 4 p.m. line up your Classic Cars in Larson Manufacturing’s parking lot along Highway 69 North. The cruise leaves at 5 p.m. A street dance featuring the Six Fat Dutchmen will take place from 8 p.m.-12 a.m. Admission is $5, ages five and under are free. A drawing will be held at 9:30 p.m. at the dance for a new computer, video camera and 27&uot; TV. Fireworks will be held at 10 p.m. on the east edge of town.

Sunday, July 14:

– The Pelican Breeze will hold a Brunch on the Breeze cruise at 10:30 a.m. Call 373-2630 for reservations.

– Luverne’s Concertina will present its weekly free program of live music beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Edgewater Park bandshell. The band’s two hour set list includes polkas, waltzes and other favorite old time melodies. The program is sponsored by the Albert Lea Federation of Musicians Local 567 and the city of Albert Lea.
