ALHS girls take 4 of 5 top awards at Fairmont

FAIRMONT &045; It may be the offseason for high school sports, but Albert Lea’s cheerleaders are not resting on their laurels from a successful 2001-02 season.
Eleven Albert Lea High School cheerleaders attended a recent camp at Fairmont, where they brought home four of the five top camp awards and placed in all five. Universal Cheerleaders Association provided instruction for the camp, which included 26 squads from 22 schools and 220 total participants.
The ALHS girls, under the direction of Donna Marty, won these awards:
– Top Banana Award &045; Given to the top overall team at the camp;
– UCA Traditions Award &045; Given by staff to the team they feel was the best example of an excellent all-around squad; criteria included skills, attitude, work ethic and energy;
– UCA Leadership Award &045; Voted on by the other campers as to who they felt they most wanted to be like in terms of skill and enthusiasm;
– Sideline Cheer &045; First place;
– Time Out Cheer &045; Third place.
Four ALHS cheerleaders tried out for and made the UCA All-Star squad: Kristin Mummert, Kaylee Hable, Sasha Flores and Caitlin Marty.
The rest of the camp squad included Kellie Jordahl, Britta Anderson, Laura Kuphal, Brittany VanReese, Amy Sharpsteen, Heidi Stegenga and Mary Beth Cook.
