An injury accident while horseback riding seven years ago cost more than $700,000 for the owner and caretaker, thanks to a Freeborn County jury’s decision Thursday.

Dawn Marie Pike, 35, a former Gordonsville resident, fell from a horse in the southeast of Freeborn County on May 3, 1995, while accompanied by Connie Nesset, a friend of the horse owner of Albert Lea.

Pike sued Nesset and the owner, Dwaine Bridley of Glenville, contending the accident occurred as a result of their negligence.

Pike injured her left wrist and claimed that it has been causing constant pain and impairment.

The defense attorney, Peter Sandberg, denied that Nesset and Bridley were responsible for the injury, and tried to prove only a small portion of the pain and impairment were derived from the injury.

Phillip Kohl, attorney for Pike, claimed the damage in the past and future would cost around $2 million.

After a three-hour long deliberation, the six-member jury concluded that the defendants are partially responsible for the accident. The figure they calculated includes $452,400 for the loss of future wages, $118,320 for future health-care costs, and $85,000 for pain, disability and emotional distress.
