Weekend Planner: Conger centennial leads weekend activity

&uot;We came… we saw … we Conger-ed,&uot; is just one of the themes for Conger’s Centennial celebration this weekend. Friday through Sunday the little town will be buzzing with activity; make sure to attend to beard judging contest Sunday.

Here is a list of events on tap for the weekend:

Friday, June 21:

– Conger Centennial car and truck cruise beginning at 6 p.m. in Alden, winding through Emmons and back into Conger. At 7 p.m. there will be a hall of fame softball game and Alden-Conger Girls’ Varsity Softball vs. an alumni team game, and at 8 p.m. the fireman’s benefit dance will begin at the fire hall.

– Austin Singles Dance, at the Blooming Prairie Serviceman’s Club. Music by the Buch Hallow Band from 8:30-12:30 p.m. Alumni welcome.

– The Pelican Breeze will hold a Friday night pizza cruise at 6 p.m. Reservations are required. Call (507) 383-2630.

– The Minnesota Festival Theatre production of &uot;The Sunshine Boys&uot; will be presented at the Albert Lea Civic Theatre at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, call 377-4371.

Saturday, June 22:

– The Albert Lea Farmers’ Market will be held in the parking lot at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Water Street beginning at 9 a.m.

– Pelican Breeze/MFT will hold a &uot;Cruise with the Stars&uot; fundraiser cruise, at 10 and 11:30 a.m. Reservations are required. Call 507-383-2630.

– USMC Toy Run, 150 mile motorcycle ride to benefit children. Registration takes place in Albert Lea HyVee parking lot from 10:30-11:30 a.m., ride leaves at 12 p.m. A new toy for donation is the only requirement to ride. Raffles, door prizes, live music and a hog roast will follow with all proceeds going towards children.

– Lunder Lutheran Church salad luncheon and bake sale, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Adult lunch costs $4; children ages six to 12, $2; children

– The Pelican Breeze cruise boat will hold a public cruise at 2 p.m.

– Conger Centennial events: All-day flea market in the Conger Park, a merchandise shoot at 10 a.m. in the old stockyard north of the elevator, an antique tractor pull south of the elevator at 11 a.m., a car show and big truck show and shine at the city park beginning at 2 p.m., a 5 p.m. kiddie parade from Main Street to the community center, the Conger School reunion and supper at 6 p.m., and a street dance from 6-10 p.m. There will be an old-fashioned “free show” at dusk.

Sunday, June 23:

– Make a Wish Golf Tournament at Green Lea Golf Course, 9 a.m. check in with 10 a.m. start. Sign up at Green Lea Golf course, registration fee is $35 for non-members, $30 for members including dinner after the tournament. It is a two person best shot tournament with all proceeds going to the Make A Wish Foundation.

– The Blue Banners Orchestra will present its weekly free program of live music in the park beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Edgewater Park bandshell. Under the leadership of Don Johnson the Banners will present a program of polka, waltz, county and popular music from through out the years. The program is sponsored by the Albert Lea Federation of Musicians Local 567 and the city of Albert Lea.

– The Pelican Breeze will hold a public cruise at 2 p.m.

– Conger Centennial Events: 7 a.m.-11 a.m. waffle breakfast at the community center. The flea market will open mid-morning. The Centennial Church service will begin at 9 a.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Conger. The centennial parade starts at noon, and following the parade, the Conger Volunteer Fire Department will host the South Central Association Fireman’s Tournament. Following the tournament, the judging of the beard-growing contest will be held in the fire hall.
