The Crime Victim’s Crisis Center is an organization that can change someone’s life in an instant. Mary Petersen he has been a volunteer for the center for three-and-a-half years.

The CVCC provides 24-hour support and advocacy services to victims of crime. One of the many responsibilities of a volunteer is to be on call for the 24 hour abuse hotline. One weekend a month or more, Petersen will be answering calls having to do with suicide, stalking, domestic violence and many other life-threatening situations. She carries a cell phone with her wherever she goes. She gets called out on rape cases to assist the victim.

You can also find Petersen giving more of her time in assisting children who are involved in domestic violence situations. She assists the child advocate at a class held every Monday night at the CVVC. Children between the ages of seven and 18 go to this class to be educated on domestic violence as well as to be taught how to cope with their situations.

Petersen, who moved back to Albert Lea about five years ago, said she enjoys giving time to her community. There is a demand for volunteers for this organization so she gives much of her time to these people and children who need some guidance and simply an ear to listen.
