WELLS – The United South Central Rebels won the most events, but the St. Peter Saints had the most depth. It added up to an extremely rare regular-season loss for the Rebels.
St. Peter, which won five events to home team’s seven, upset the USC boys’ track and field team in the 7th Annual Rebel Relays at Wells Tuesday. The Saints had 214 points, USC 210, Minnesota Valley Lutheran 184, Martin County West 133, Madelia/Truman 97, NRHEG 94, Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 58 and Hayfield 54.
Two of the Rebels’ victories came in traditional relays. Brandon Grunzke, Jon Beyer, Casey Christenson and Jon Voigt won the sprint medley while Shea Kaiser, Bob Schmitz, Brandon Alphs and Christenson took the 4×200.
Justin Youngblom, Eric Langsev, Jake Stenzel and Taylor Martin combined for first in the 1600-meter run relay. Christenson, Trevor Rollenhagen and Callan Pitcher won the triple jump relay, Alphs, Grunzke and Spencer Niebuhr the pole vault relay, and Alphs, Shea Kaiser and Pitcher the long jump relay.
Placing second for USC: 3×110 shuttle hurdle relay (Dusty Niebuhr, Rollenhagen, Steve Wood); 4×100 (Kaiser, Pitcher, Alphs, Schmitz); distance medley (Voigt, Langsev, Youngblom, Rollenhagen); 4×400 (Schmitz, Kaiser, Dusty Niebuhr, Christenson).
The field events provided the NRHEG highlights.
Sonny Berg, Brian Bos and Peter Petride teamed for second in the long jump while Luke Perry, Bill Root and James Petsinger were second in the discus. Matt Bayerkohler, Matt Reiter, Adam Routh and Tim Rysavy took fourth in the 4×800.
The Panthers compete today at Blue Earth Area. The Rebels are at St. Peter next Tuesday.
