The Albert Lea wrestling team made a big jump in the latest Class AAA rankings released on Friday by TheGuillotine.com.

The Tigers moved from sixth to third and replaced Section 1AAA rival Hastings, who plummeted to No. 8. Owatonna is currently ranked seventh.

The biggest mover for the Tigers was junior Trevor Westerlund, who jumped from No. 7 in the rankings released on Dec. 9, all the way to the top at 106 pounds. Westerlund is the Tigers’ first No. 1-ranked wrestler since Cory Hansen on Nov. 29, 2009 at 125 pounds.

“Since he got his weight down to 108 pounds he’s been going through guys,” Tigers coach Larry Goodnature said. “He’s on a roll.”

At 113 pounds, previously unranked junior Garrett Wangsness jumped into the rankings at No. 4, and his twin brother, Dakota, fell from eighth to out of the rankings at 120.

Albert Lea ninth-grader Triston Westerlund earned his first career ranking at No. 7 at 160 pounds, and senior Trey Hable moved from being the fifth-ranked wrestler at 160 to second-ranked at 170 and behind defending state champion, Kyle Begin, of Anoka.

Dalton Westerlund went from being ranked No. 3 at 170 to No. 7 at 182, although he wrestled at 160 pounds at the Rumble on the Red tournament on Thursday and Friday in Fargo, N.D.

Owatonna has five wrestlers ranked in the top 10, and Hastings had four, all ranked within the top 6.
