The Albert Lea Art Center has changed the name and location of its annual Winter Art Show. This year, the event is known as the Festival of Arts and will be held at Northbridge Mall on Saturday and Sunday, March 23 and 24. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.
&uot;We decided to take our Winter Art Show and celebrate all of the arts,&uot; said Emily Faugstad, chairwoman of the event. &uot;We’ve added entertainment, including singers, dancers and storytellers.&uot;
There will be live entertainment each day. The Rendezvous Portrait Competition will be judged on Sunday, but entries will be exhibited all weekend, and people can cast a vote for the People’s Choice Award at any time during the weekend.
Of course, the event will feature exhibits by visual artists as well. They include: Harlan Bang, Beth Tostenson, Leanne Castillo, Pat Jenson, Bud Hebert, Sue Cowell, John Eberhardt, Carole and Nate Eggum, Joe Nelson, Jack and Eloise Adams, Dave Lacour and Rory Mattson. The artists will exhibit paintings, woodcarvings, natural media and pottery.
The public is invited; admission is free.
Following is a roundup of other area events happening this weekend:
Friday, March 22
– The kindergarten through sixth-grade elementary/middle school art exhibit continues at the Albert Lea Art Center from noon-4 p.m. Students’ works from Albert Lea elementary classes, Alden-Conger Elementary, St. Theodore’s and Glenville- Emmons are on display.
– Abundant Life Tabernacle Church, 408 E. 18th St., will hold a clothing giveaway from 8 a.m. -2 p.m. Items have been donated by local consignment shops, church members and friends.
Saturday, March 23
– The Albert Lea Art Center’s Festival of Arts will be held from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at Northbridge Mall. A tentative schedule of the live entertainment includes: 11 a.m. – Pan flutes playing music from the Andes Mountains; 1 p.m. – Anita Isenor’s Mideast Dancers; 2 p.m. Joyce Matthies Dancers; 3 p.m. Pan flutes; 4 p.m. – Paula (Peterson) Hanson; 5 p.m. – Merle Krause, ’50s music.
– An all-you-can-eat fish fry to benefit the Albert Lea Art Center will be held from 4:45-7:30 p.m. at the Albert Lea American Legion, 142 N. Broadway. Tickets are available at the Art Center, 224 S. Broadway, and at the door.
Sunday, March 24
– The Hartland Firefighters’ Auxiliary will hold a pancake breakfast from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Hartland Community Center. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for ages 5-9, and children 4 and under eat free. Supplemental funds will be provided by AAL Branch 3884. Proceeds will go toward the purchase of a new fire truck.
– The Conger Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual pancake breakfast from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Conger Community Center. The menu includes pancakes, French toast, sausage, eggs, juice and coffee. Cost is $4 per adult and $2 for ages 5 to 12. Preschoolers eat free. The event is sponsored by AAL Branch 11184.
– The Albert Lea Art Center’s Festival of Arts continues at Northbridge Mall from noon-5 p.m. A tentative schedule of entertainment includes: Noon – Storytellers Bev Jackson and Michael Cotter; 2 p.m. – Fashion show; 3 p.m. – Anita Isenor’s Mideast Dancers; and 4 p.m. – Pan flutes.
– Calvary Baptist Church, 2016 Bridge Ave., hosts a concert by Calvary Connection at 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served after the concert. A love offering will be taken during the concert. Calvary Connection is a group of six people from the Alden-Albert Lea area: Dave and Pat Rambo, Janet Poeschl, Paul and Marly Evenson and their sound technician Liz Thundstedt.
