AUSTIN — Two Austin 16-year-olds were caught green-handed early Friday morning after vandalism was reported at SEMA Equipment Inc.
Police Capt. Dave McKichan said an overnight delivery truck driver reported fresh green spray paint on the SEMA building and work trucks around 2:30 a.m. Friday morning. The windows had been shattered out of several work trucks, as well, McKichan said. When police arrived, a 16-year-old boy was yelling obscenities at the officers from across the street.
McKichan said the boy had green spray paint on his hands. An adult at the residence brought out a second 16-year-old boy to give an alibi for the green-handed teen. However, the second teen reportedly had green spray paint and glass shards on his clothing.
Police later found a set of keys on one of the boys; McKichan said the keys were allegedly taken from a truck at Tiny’s Body Shop.
The two boys were taken to the Mower County jail, where juveniles can be held for up to 24 hours in a segregated area.
McKichan said the police may have never caught the alleged perpetrators if the overnight delivery driver had not seen the fresh spray paint.
“If he had not been there and made the report … we wouldn’t have had an opportunity,” he said.
