WINONA – It was already the longest road trip of the season for the Albert Lea High School girls’ basketball team.
It probably seemed even longer on the way home.
The Tigers led from the start but were eventually taken to overtime at Winona, where they were held scoreless in the extra session while losing 47-41 Thursday night.
It was yet another frustrating loss for the Tigers, who fell to 4-14 in the conference and 8-14 overall while Winona improved to 11-7 and 14-8.
&uot;If you look at it statistically, we beat them in a lot of ways,&uot; said ALHS coach Karol Hansen. &uot;We just have to learn how to finish a game. We’re making progress every time we step on the court as far as playing a full game. Hopefully we’ve been in enough of these situations where it will pay off in the second season – the section tournament.&uot;
It was the second game in a row the Tigers lost despite making more field goals than their opponents. But the Tigers were outscored 6-0 in overtime.
Albert Lea led 11-2, 24-16 and 31-28 at the first three quarter breaks.
Danielle Jacobs scored 11 points to lead Albert Lea. Aubree Page scored 10, Beth Kolling nine, Jenny Vanderploeg four, Janelle Vietze three, Amy Ravenhorst two, Danielle Rankin two.
The Tigers were 14-for-34 from the floor and 12-for-21 at the line, Winona 13-for-30 and 15-for-24. Albert Lea had an 18-17 edge on the boards.
&uot;The girls played real hard, said Hansen. &uot;We just need that mental edge at the right time, to do the little things right that make a big difference in the outcome of a game.&uot;
The Tigers are off until Tuesday, when they open section play at Willmar.
