50 years ago — 1962
Balanced scoring led the Albert Lea basketball team to a 56-46 victory over Northfield. Clair Flaten scored 14 points, John Goodmanson 13 and Lowell Syverson and Gary Jacobsen 10 points each for the Tigers.
The Albert Lea wrestling team defeated Northfield 33-12. Winning matches for the Tigers were Gary Neist at 95 pounds, Mike Callahan at 112, Pete Fabry at 120, Rog Kittelson at 133, Bruce Palmer at 154, Dan Jahns at 165 and Jeff Brooke at heavyweight.
The Northwood-Kensett basketball team raised their overall record to 9-0 and their North Iowa Conference mark to 7-0 with a 63-49 win against Garner. Phil Johnson scored 35 points for the Vikings.
25 years ago — 1987
The Albert Lea boys’ basketball team lost to Rosemount 71-52 in the championship game of the Granite City Classic in St. Cloud. Tim Struck scored 20 points and Steve Bangh 10 for the Tigers. Albert Lea received the Sportsman Trophy.
Albert Lea boys’ hockey defeated Mankato 5-2 and improved their season record to 8-0-1. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Mark Eronen with two and Steve Nelson, Steve Stoltz and Dave Nystrom with one each.
The Ellendale-Geneva girls’ basketball team defeated Medford 39-19 and led the Gopher Conference with 5-0 record. Leading scorers for E-G were Kim Anderson with 11 points and Stacy Wallace with 10.
10 years ago — 2002
Josh Stieler, a graduate of Albert Lea High School and the 1997 Tribune Area Football Player of the Year, attended college at Wisconsin-Eau Claire and lettered for four years in football. He gained all-conference recognition and all-region academic honors.
Laura Hillman and Brittany Arendt scored two goals each and Jasey Porter one for Albert Lea girls’ hockey in their 5-3 hockey win over Mankato East. The overall record for Albert Lea was 9-4 and 5-3 in the Big Nine Conference.
Glenville-Emmons defeated Lyle-Pacelli 45-35 in a Southeast Conference basketball game. The Wolverines were led by Paul Kleven with 25 points and Nick Flatness with 18. The win raised G-E to 8-1 for the season.
