Sheriff Don Nolander was named the President of the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association at the organization’s 111th annual winter conference in Rochester.
The association consisting of the state’s 87 sheriffs is dedicated to promote public safety.
The duty also involves public safety education and advice to state legislators and administration.
In the case of recent felony DWI legislation, the organization played a key role to provide information to lawmakers, according to Nolander.
After the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, public security in connection with weapons of mass destruction has become a critical issue, which Nolander is expected to tackle.
&uot;I consider the nomination as a great honor to be recognized by the association and sheriffs, given an opportunity to serve as the president of the organization during this challenging time for law enforcement organizations,&uot; Nolander said.
In his one-year term as the president, Nolander is also going to participate meetings for national-level conferences.
Nolander started his law enforcement career in 1971 as a jailer/dispatcher with the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office. After being a patrol deputy and investigator/supervisor, he was elected sheriff in 1982.
