This year more than ever, Thanksgiving will be a time to appreciate what we have. It will be done in 2001 with new comprehension that it can be taken away at any moment.
More than 4,000 Americans died at the hands of terrorists on Sept. 11, and all the families and friends affected understand this more than anybody.
It’s a lesson in which we shouldn’t need a crash course. A quick look at the facts shows that we in America have more than any country – today or in the history of the world. From our modest beginnings, which we remember each year at this time, we have grown to truly become a nation of plenty. Sometimes we take that richness for granted, and are stunned if it is taken away.
Being thankful for the things we have – from material wealth, to health, to loved ones – is a perfect prescription for avoiding the image of America that is hated by people like Osama bin Laden. An arrogant, thankless America is one that wins no friends.
But an America that understands it is blessed, and lives every day with this appreciation, would be an America that is kind and compassionate, and grateful rather than greedy.
Today will be a Thanksgiving with special meaning. But by exercising the principles of giving thanks every day of the year, we can be a better nation.
