Breakfasts, suppers, entertainment on tap

A fundraiser for the Albert Lea American Legion and VFW Honor Guard will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in the Southwest Middle School Little Theatre.

The fundraiser will feature Harley Worthit from Branson, Mo.

Also featured will be Neil and Barb Lang on instrumentals and their daughter, Stephanie Erdman, on vocals. Merle Krause will play drums.

Tickets are $12 per person and are available at Hy-Vee, Nelson’s Market Place, Hallmark, American Legion or from Honor Guard members.

The Honor Guard has attended as many as six funerals in one week.

Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.

Friday, Feb. 19

 First Lutheran Church of Albert Lea, 301 W. Clark St., will hold a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the church basement. For appointments, call Julie at 373-6424.

The all-member show will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from noon to 4 p.m.

A spaghetti supper to benefit science fair students will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Alden-Conger School. Donations will be received.

St. Theodore Catholic Church will hold a fish fry from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in Marian Hall. Cost is $8 for adults, $3 for children under 12 years and children under 3 eat free. Fish, baked or mashed potatoes, cole slaw, rolls and ice cream with toppings will be served.

Shy Ministries will hold a a fundraiser concert from 7 to 9 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Clarks Grove. Shy Ministries’ music group focuses on mission work and bringing others to Christ through music. It is comprised of musicians from a number of area churches. The group performs contemporary music and includes a drummer, guitarists, pianist and vocalists. This concert will help fund a weeklong camp for children with Down syndrome in Honduras. In addition to music, there will be games and prizes for the kids as well as information about the mission trip at the concert. Only 250 tickets for the concert will be available. A suggested donation of $10 is requested per ticket. Kids 12 years and younger will be admitted free. The Albert Lea Thunder will play Topeka at 7:30 p.m. at City Arena.

Saturday, Feb. 20

The all-member show will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

 A spaghetti supper and silent auction benefit for Richard and Sue Foss will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Church of Christ, 1705 SE Marshall St. Sue Foss is battling stage 3 ovarian cancer and complications from surgery. Her chemotherapy has been postponed to give her time to heal. In addition, a benefit fund has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank.

Moscow Lutheran Church, 4 miles east and 2 miles south of Hollandale, will host “Hot Dogs for Haiti,” a fundraiser for the Lazarus Project: Village of Hope Clinic, Little Children of Jesus Orphanage and Grace Mission Orphanage. The program will be presented at 5 and 7 p.m. Haitian-born Moscow member Raphael Lieske landed in Haiti a few hours before the earthquake. He was there to bring his Haitian wife back to Minnesota. They are now safely home. Supper will be served from 5:30 to 7 p.m. There will be hot dogs, sloppy joes, salads and desserts.

The 17th annual South Central Minnesota 2010 Pheasants Forever Banquet will be held at the American Legion Club. Social hour starts at 5:30 p.m. and the dinner will be served at 7. There will also be drawings and a silent auction. Banquet admission includes dinner, chances to win prizes and Pheasants Forever membership, which includes a one-year subscription to Pheasants Forever Journal of Upland Conservation. Sunday, Feb. 21

 The Albert Lea Alano Society will hold a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon at 1005 N. Ulstad Ave. Pancakes, French toast, hashbrowns, eggs, sausage, coffee and juice will be served. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and younger.

 The Albert Lea Noon Kiwanis Club will host a Dad’s Belgian Waffles breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Albert Lea American Legion Club, 142 N. Broadway Ave. Waffles, sausage, coffee, milk and juice will be served. Cost is $6 per person. Proceeds benefit local youth.

The Freeborn County Historical Museum will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. so the public can see special exhibits for the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts. Admission is $1. Boy Scouts and children 11 and younger will be admitted free.

 Legends will play at a dance at the Carpenter, Iowa, Community Center from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Carpenter Community Club. Admission is $7 per person.
