Good news is in today’s newspaper. Tammy Estes of Northwood, Iowa, won a trip to South Carolina to the set of “Army Wives,” a show on Lifetime Network. She is the wife of Thomas Estes, a soldier in the Minnesota National Guard. She won a contest through the statewide Beyond the Yellow Ribbon support group to be on the show. She submitted a video and it won enough support to put her in the top three, to her surprise.
Lawmakers across the county often see measures with children’s names as the kind that call for them to make a quick reaction to a one-time incident. However, Kadyn’s Law is different. Iowa truly needs stricter laws for people who disobey school bus stop arms. The state has seventh-lightest school bus laws in the nation. It’s time to increase the penalties.
Whether you like or dislike the quarterback of the Denver Broncos, you have to admire the way he plays football. He plays hard every down. He strives to win. He loves the sport and is clearly having fun out there. And he practices true sportsmanship and has a wholesome, positive attitude. This is the sort of publicity the NFL needs, considering the angry behavior shown by players such as Ndamukong Suh or the criminal notoriety the small minority of players such as Michael Vick have brought the league. More NFL players could practice the best Tebow attribute — selflessness.
To poor treatment of children.
Children have been on the victim end of some of the news this past week, whether it was discipline, pornography or even an effort in Iowa to change school bus stop arm laws. We want to thank the overwhelming number of parents and grown-ups in the lives of children who treat them well, who praise the young ones and who bring them successfully to adulthood with love, care, protection, kindness and knowledge.
