The best chance for the Albert Lea High School girls’ soccer team came off the foot of Amy Ravenhorst, but the free kick sailed just over the cross bar.
At the end, victory just barely eluded the Tigers. Again.
The ALHS girls lost yet another close one, falling 1-0 in overtime to Winona at Hammer Field Saturday.
Although Tigers coach Todd Lange described the defensive struggle as &uot;somewhat even,&uot; he said the Winhawks had an advantage because they were more aggressive.
&uot;For some reason, we weren’t as aggressive as usual,&uot; said Lange. &uot;We seemed a little tired.&uot;
Neither team was able to muster much offense, with Winona outshooting the Tigers 8-4 for the day.
The lone goal came with four minutes remaining in the second five-minute overtime.
The Tigers were missing two defenders – Stacy Vanderploeg and Holly Nelson – and junior varsity call-ups Kaci Bergstrom and Brianne Plantage filled in nicely, according to Lange.
&uot;Overall, when we had the ball we did a nice job with it,&uot; said Lange. &uot;But any time the ball was up for grabs, we didn’t take advantage of that.&uot;
The Albert Lea junior varsity won 5-0, with two goals by Plantage and one apiece by Julia Stapleton, Sydney Staloch and Lyndsey Sorenson.
The Tigers, 5-9-3 overall and 4-6-3 in the Big Nine, open section tournament play Saturday.
