Albert Lea entered Monday’s game with Mankato West riding the high of winning seven of its past eight games, but the Scarlets killed that momentum with a 6-2 victory over the Tigers in Mankato.
Albert Lea (11-10-1, 6-2 Big Nine) outshot the Scarlets 26-21, but Tigers head coach Roy Nystrom said the difference was Mankato West outworked Albert Lea.
The Scarlets (10-11-1, 2-6 Big Nine) scored two goals in each period and put a damper on the Tigers’ chances of securing a top three seed for the section playoffs.
“All I know is we didn’t play very well,” Nystrom said. “We didn’t win a lot of one-on-one battles and we didn’t win races to the puck.”
Dillon Stolt scored a second period goal on an assist from Casey Marka and Mason Tuohy added a power-play goal in the third period from Tyler Haaland and Tyler Brackey.
Albert Lea plays Rochester Mayo Tuesday at City Arena.
