WELLS – Some key offensive plays helped the United South Central Rebels start the football season on a successful note.
Defense kept it that way.
The Rebels, who won in overtime in week one, improved to 2-0 Friday with a 21-0 shutout of Martin County West at Wells.
&uot;The key tonight was defense,&uot; said Rebels coach Brent Schimek. &uot;We had good field position all night.&uot;
And they got four turnovers, the first of which – a fumble recovery by Justin Bixby – led to the first of two touchdown runs by senor Noel Johnson, who topped 100 yards for the second week in a row.
Jon Beyer also ran for a touchdown, totaling 33 yards on 10 carries.
Ben Wetzell completed four of 10 passes for 55 yards, all to Dusty Niebuhr.
Trevor Haugh had eight tackles and an interception to lead the defense. Chance Kimpton made six tackles.
The Rebels face an early-season conference showdown this week, traveling to perennial power Waterville-Elysian-Morristown.
