FARIBAULT – The final game was similar to the entire season for the Albert Lea Colonels.
They missed several opportunities and gave their opponents way too many, stranding nine baserunners and allowing seven unearned runs in a 15-2 Southern Minny League playoff loss at Faribault.
&uot;We didn’t hit the ball like we needed to, and we had a few too many errors again,&uot; said manager Bill Trygstad. &uot;Lately, that’s kind of been the scenario.&uot;
Albert Lea’s town baseball team ended its season with a record of 1-22 while Faribault improved to 5-14.
A two-out single by Bryan Baggett drove in Matt Trygstad in the top of the first inning, but the Colonels’ 1-0 lead didn’t last long. Two errors led to five unearned runs as the Lakers put six on the board in the bottom of the first.
Baggett drove in the Colonels’ other run in the fifth, when the Colonels hit into an inning-ending, bases-loaded double play.
Baggett had two of Albert Lea’s four hits. Brett Damerow doubled. Matt Trygstad singled.
Craig Smith pitched the first 1 1/3 innings and took the loss. One of the seven runs off him was earned as he walked two and struck out one. Pitching in relief were Mike Piechowski, Derek Anderson and Brad Carlson.
&uot;The guys played hard and they learned a lot this year,&uot; said Bill Trygstad. &uot;Hopefully, a year of experience will help and we’ll improve next year.&uot;
The Colonels, according to Trygstad, learned from some of the best.
&uot;It will be interesting to see how many state tournament teams we played this year,&uot; he said. &uot;I’d bet it’s six or seven. We played a real tough schedule. Hopefully, we’ll get a lot of guys out again next year and obviously be a lot better.&uot;
