The Wolverines advanced to the Section 2A South tournament despite falling 3-1 to Blooming Prairie in the sub-section title game at Mankato’s Caswell Park Thursday.

They’re going to section by virtue of their 4-1 semifinal victory over Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton.

&uot;That second game was basically meaningless, since both teams qualify for section,&uot; said Wolverines coach Bob Staska. &uot;It just means we go as a No. 2 seed.&uot;

Jill Delger led the Wolverines in the opener, pitching a three-hitter while going 2-for-3 at the plate. Katie Kimble was also 2-for-3. Fallon Lorenzen, Brooke Erickson and Jolene Peterson contributed one hit apiece.

&uot;Our kids were intense and real focused, and they played well,&uot; said Staska.

Jill Yost was 2-for-3 against Blooming Prairie. Peterson, Kimble, Sheri Lair and Megan Avery each had one hit.

Delger again went the distance on the mound, allowing two earned runs. She walked two and struck out three.

&uot;Jill did a great job all day long,&uot; said Staska. &uot;She pitched 13 innings and only had three walks. That’s outstanding.&uot;

The coach was also pleased with the overall effort against a Blooming Prairie team that improved its record to 18-2.

&uot;I thought we played real well,&uot; said Staska. &uot;We had four mental errors, two on offense and two on defense, and it cost us. Blooming Prairie is a good team.&uot;

The Wolverines, 15-8, open section play Saturday at Caswell Park, with game times to be determined.
