WELLS – The word &uot;disappointed&uot; is not often used when discussing the United South Central boys’ track and field team.
It has, however, been mentioned more than once in recent days. But not by coach Kent Viesselman. He was quite satisfied with his squad’s fifth-place finish in this year’s True Team State Meet.
&uot;A few of the kids were a little disappointed, and felt we could have finished higher,&uot; said Viesselman. &uot;But there are 202 Class A boys’ teams in the state. Fifth place is not too shabby.&uot;
And besides, it’s about where Viesselman figured they’d be.
&uot;Before the meet we were rated fifth,&uot; said Viesselman. &uot;We performed in each event about like I hoped we would.&uot;
The disappointment stemmed from a sprained ankle that sidelined senior standout Brandon Aukes.
&uot;But I was pleased that the kids didn’t let down because of that disappointment,&uot; said Viesselman.
Top-rated Plainview won with 465 points, with Mayer Lutheran second out of nine teams with 419.5. The Rebels had 327 points.
Jake Courrier was a double winner for the Rebels, taking the shot put and discus. Casey Christensen also had a big day, placing second in the 400 and triple jump, fourth in the 200 and tying teammate Adam Korn for fifth in the 100.
Tim Rauenhorst and Jeff Goeden finished third, and fourth, respectively, in the 3200. Goeden ran a personal-best time for sixth in the 1600, as did Bob Schmitz for ninth in the 400.
There were 18 competitors in each event.
The Rebels’ top relay was the 4×100 team of Korn, Luke Hill, Brandon Alphs and Britt Wegner, which placed second. Matt Theede, Jon Voigt, Justin Youngblom and Eric Langsev combined for third in the 4×800.
The Rebels host the sub-section meet Thursday.
