Weather foils automobiles

GENEVA — The roads in southern Minnesota continued to cause headaches for drivers over the weekend.

And today nearly all of Minnesota except the western third, much of the northern Iowa and the northwestern half of Wisconsin remain in a winter weather advisory. Look for patchy, blowing snow today.

Drizzle fell on roads on Sunday, making the roads slick. Then snow fell on top of it overnight. The storm total from last night and today is forecast to be 1 to 2 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

There were two cars in the ditch along Interstate 90 near the Petran exit, according to a driver who made the trip this morning between Albert Lea and Austin.

And reports from the Freeborn County Law Enforcement Center showed there were several car crashes in Albert Lea and around Freeborn County over the weekend, though the only serious injury was a woman who hit a tree near Geneva.

The low pressure system that is bringing this storm is expected to lift today, bringing back the unseasonably warm weather the region has been experiencing. The high temperature on Tuesday is forecast at 22 degrees, Wednesday 31 and Thursday 34.

Waseca woman hits tree

A driver who was injured Saturday afternoon when her northbound car left Interstate 35 near the Geneva exit and struck a tree was released from the hospital later that day.

Amy M. Dobberstein, 21, of Waseca, was driving a 2008 Pontiac G6 GT, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. She was transported to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. Her airbag deployed, and she was wearing her seat belt. Allen’s Tow-N-Travel hauled the car away.

The crash happened at 12:37 a.m., the State Patrol report says. It cites the road condition as dry.

The Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office assisted the State Patrol. Clarks Grove and Geneva fire departments also responded.

 2 men injured in rollover

Two people — not wearing seat belts — were injured Sunday evening when a pickup ran off Interstate 35 and rolled.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Felipe Silvestre, 39, of Minneapolis was headed southbound on Interstate 35 in a 2002 GMC Sierra at about 7:45 p.m. three miles north of Hope when the vehicle lost traction and ran off the roadway, rolled several times, then landed on its wheels.

The report states Silvestre suffered a minor injury and his passenger, Gilberto Sanchez, 28, of Minneapolis, suffered an injury that was not life-threatening. Sanchez was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System in Owatonna.

The Steele County Sheriff’s Office assisted the State Patrol.

Plow driver in fair condition

The driver of a Minnesota Department of Transportation snowplow struck by a Union Pacific train Friday in Kiester remains in fair condition as of this morning.

The driver, Bradley Bruegger, 55, of Wells, was taken to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The State Patrol also said the driver was wearing his seat belt.

The collision pushed the plow three-fourths of a mile down the track before stopping. According to the State Patrol, the 2007 MnDOT single-axle plow truck was southbound on Minnesota Highway 22 when it was struck in the side door by the east-traveling train.

The crash occurred at 2:13 p.m. Conditions were listed as icy. The State Patrol stated the railroad intersection does not have arms, but it does have lights and audible signals.
