The conditions were tough and so was the competition as the Tigers finished fifth in the Big Nine Conference tournament at Green Lea Monday.

&uot;It was a good day for golf in Albert Lea,&uot; said ALHS coach Doug Christopherson. &uot;We had some outstanding rounds, considering the weather.

&uot;We’re young.&uot;

Rochester Century, undefeated in regular-season Big Nine meets, won the tournament with 312 strokes to take the conference title.

Combined with regular-season results, the Tigers finished fifth overall in the Big Nine.

Adam Elseth was the leader Monday, posting a 76 from the No. 3 position to provide some early excitement.

The Tigers were still in the hunt when Adam Boelter and Josh Tubbs came in with 81s.

&uot;It was exciting for a while,&uot; said Christopherson. &uot;We posted some good scores early. But in the Big Nine, you need six good scores; that’s just a fact of life.&uot;

The other score that counted for the Tigers was Dan Breuer’s 83.

Matt Tubbs shot 85, Josh Jones 88.

Mike Fiedler, a sophomore from Faribault, was the medalist with a 71.

The Tigers travel to Rochester’s Eastwood Golf Course Friday for the opening round of the Section 1AA tournament. The top eight teams advance to the second round.
