Carlie Wagner and the New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva girls’ basketball team faced its biggest test — on paper — on Saturday and passed with flying colors.

Class AA’s No. 2-ranked Panthers (20-0) beat Class A’s second-ranked Goodhue 77-68 at Carleton College and led by as many as 27 points.

The sophomore Wagner alone outscored Goodhue 22-21 in the first half and finished with a school-record 39 points. Mikayla Miller scored 30 and Erica Tipcke 23 for Goodhue (17-3).

“I was very proud of our efforts tonight,” Panthers coach John Schultz said, who’s team has won 37 of its last 40 games. “They could not stop our fast break as we got a lot of layups. Our girls did a nice job looking for the outlet to Wagner who scored, a lot off fast breaks. Anna Schlaak dominated inside.”

Schlaak finished with eight points and 14 rebounds.

“We knew they were a quality team coming in,” Schultz said. “We rose to the occasion.”
