Albert Lea High School administrators are trying to get students pumped up with school spirit during Winterfest Week.

Activities Director John Double said that just like during Homecoming Week, students at the high school will be admitted free into sporting events with their students ID card and students kindergarten through seventh-grade will get in free with a paying or pass-bearing adult.

“It’s always good to revive the school spirit during the year,” Double said. “That’s what we’re hoping to do this week.”

Dress up days are again a part of Winterfest. Monday all staff wore white, boy students wore blue and girl students wore red. Tuesday was “black out” day with everyone wearing black. Today students will wear pajamas, and Thursday is “white out” with everyone wearing white. On Friday students can wear their favorite sports apparel.

Double said he was hoping to have some special opportunities for students, like how players from Waldorf College signed autographs at the boys’ hockey game Tuesday. Other special events include a dodgeball tournament on Friday afternoon that has 32 teams signed up so far.

Students at the high school won’t have classes Friday afternoon. The dodgeball tournament will be held in the main gym. In the auxiliary gym students will get a special opportunity — trying to conquer an inflatable obstacle course brought in by the Army National Guard.

Other sporting events included Tuesday night’s boys’ basketball game againt Austin and boys’ hockey against Mankato West. Thursday there will be a girls’ hockey game against Mankato East. On Monday a pep fest was held at the high school to recognize all winter sports and activities.

On Friday night eighth- and ninth-graders will have a dance at the high school, and on Saturday night 10th-, 11th- and 12th-graders will have their dance at the high school.
