Melvin Simonson, 72

The funeral service for Melvin Orice Simonson of Broadway Board and Care, Albert Lea, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Albert Lea. The Rev. Paul Andree will officiate. Interment will be in St. Olaf Cemetery, New Richland. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Bonnerup Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to ARC or Trinity Lutheran Church, New Richland.
Melvin died Monday, June 7, 2010, at the Broadway Board and Care. He was 72 years old.
Melvin was born Aug. 31, 1937, in rural Hartland, to Oliver and Mayme (Holland) Simonson. He lived on a farm near Hartland and graduated from New Richland High School in 1956. Melvin moved to Albert Lea around 1980 and since 1996 he has resided at the Broadway Care Assisted Living. Melvin was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, New Richland. He was drafted into the United States Army. He worked as a farmer and later worked for Cedar Valley. Melvin was active with the Arc and Special Olympics especially softball and bowling. He enjoyed following current events and politics and was an avid sports fan for area sports and the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. Melvin enjoyed being in the outdoors, playing bingo, going to Diana’s Diner and visiting with the Rev. Paul Andree. His favorite pet was Rudy the resident cat.
Melvin is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins and fellow friends and staff at the Broadway Board and Care.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents: Oliver and Mayme Simonson; a sister, Joann Loken.
