Vance Stoneback, 87

Funeral services for Vance Myron Stoneback, age 87, of Alden, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral chapel. The Rev. Cherie Daniel and the Rev. Sharon Nelson will officiate. Interment will be at the Alden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service.
Vance died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at St. John’s Lutheran Home.
Vance Myron Stoneback was born on March 22, 1922, to Samuel and Iona (Logan) Stoneback in Elmore. When Vance was 2 years old, his family moved to Cumberland, Wis., where they lived until the fall of 1925 when they moved back to Minnesota. The family settled in the Alden area and Vance attended Alden schools graduating in 1940. He then farmed with his father. On June 7, 1942, Vance was united in marriage to Marian Quam at the First Methodist Church in Austin. The couple made their home in rural Alden where Vance continued to farm. After retiring in 1987 the couple moved to Alden. Vance was a member of the United Methodist Church in Alden, the Lions Club and was active in the Gideons. He enjoyed visiting friends, watching TV, reading and taking care of his lawn and garden. Vance also volunteered delivering Meals On Wheels as long as his health permitted. He will be deeply missed by family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Marian; children, Judith (Robert) Rasmussen of Monticello, Steven (Mary) Stoneback of Alden and Jon Mark Stoneback of Albert Lea; Susan (Keith) VanDeer of Cody, Wyo., Marcia (William) Kneeshaw of Littlefork, and Amy (Cory) Winch of Alden; grandchildren, Lynne (Brian O’Connell) Rasmussen, Michael (Heather) Rasmussen, Mark Stoneback, Wes (Emily) Stoneback, Jason (Liza) Stoneback, Joshua Stoneback and his fiancé Eugenia Porter, Jeramy Stoneback, Richard (Kelly) VanDeer, Traci Hodgins, Christopher, Jessica, Matthew, and Benjamin Kneeshaw, and Makya and Nodin Winch; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Elma Reim of Bemidji; sister-in-law, Beulah Luthe of Austin, many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Vance was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Iona Stoneback; parents-in-laws, Palmer and Catherine Quam; sister-in-law, Dorothy Sale; brothers-in-law, Elmer Reim, Glen Sale and Albert Luthe.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
