Mabel Weckwerth, 88

The funeral service for Mabel C. Weckwerth will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, Albert Lea. The Rev. John Holt will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea and one hour before the service at the church.
Mabel died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at St. John’s Lutheran Home, Albert Lea. She was 88 years old.
Mabel was born July 25, 1921, in Henning, to Martin and Selma (Hovland) Hamborg. She has lived in Henning, Twin Lakes, Albert Lea in the mid-’30s, New Richland, Hayward and moved back to Albert Lea. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and was a charter member of the altar guild. Mabel was also very active in the church ladies groups. She worked on the family farm, owned and operated her beauty shop in Hayward and Albert Lea, helped with mink pelting, worked the women’s activities building at the Freeborn County Fair, and worked in Dave’s machine shop. Mabel baked and decorated many wedding cakes for many years. She also enjoyed being a seamstress, embroidering especially hardanger. Mabel was a caregiver and always took care of her family. Mabel enjoyed baby sitting her grandchildren, great grandchildren and nephews.
Mabel is survived by her son, David (Margaret) Weckwerth of Albert Lea; three grandchildren: Dawn Weckwerth of Albert Lea and her fiancé David Heikkila, Dixie Weckwerth of Albert Lea and Joseph Weckwerth of Albert Lea; great-grandchildren: Sean Putman and Mikayla Putman; brother, Millard (Phyllis) Hamborg of Albert Lea; nephews: Darren Kermes, Kevin Kermes and Lynn Kermes; many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mabel is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bernard on April 15, 2006; brothers: Norris and Roy Hamborg; sisters: Gladys Hamborg and Dorothy Kermes; and several brothers- and sisters-in- law.
