Funeral services for Mary Winifred Schmidt, 94, of Albert Lea, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Church of St. Theodore. The Rev. James Berning will officiate. Interment will be at St. Theodore Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Winifred died Monday, June 22, 2009 at Thorne Crest Retirement Center.
Mary Winifred Schmidt was born on Dec. 16, 1914 to James and Ellen (Dwyer) Burnes in Berlin Township, Steele County. She attended Ellendale schools, the Bethlehem Academy in Faribault and graduated from Albert Lea High School. Winifred also attended the commercial college in Mankato. On Sept. 2, 1937, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Schmidt at the Church of St. Theodore in Albert Lea. The couple made their home in Albert Lea. Winifred was employed as a secretary at LeSota Tool Co. in Albert Lea. She was a member of the Church of St. Theodore in Albert Lea. Winifred enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, spending time at her cabin on Beaver Lake, and visiting with family and friends.
Survivors include her children, Kenneth G. (Carole) Schmidt of Luray, Va., Barbara (Richard) Smoltz of Side Lake and Steven (Lisa) Schmidt of Maplewood; nine grandchildren: Gregory Schmidt, Jill Marie Schmidt, Leanne (Schmidt) Donahue, Deborah (Smoltz) Sanders, James Smoltz, Amanda (Schmidt) Michalak, Kari Schmidt, Krystal Schmidt and Tyler Schmidt; eight great-grandchildren: Zachary and Shelby Sanders, Nicole, Renee and Erin Schmidt, Jessica and Tyler Donahue and McKenzie Michalak; and sister-in-law, Shirley Hanson of Albert Lea.
Winifred was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth; and sister, Helen Burnes.
