Funeral services for Carl Joseph Nelson, age 85, of Albert Lea, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church in Glenville. The Rev. Krista Stokke will officiate. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Joe died June 10, 2009 at his home.
Carl (Joe) Joseph Nelson was born on Sept. 5, 1923, to Carl and Mary (Kycek) Nelson in Albert Lea Township. He grew up in the Glenville area and attended country school Districts 52 and 54. On Sept. 14, 1944, Joe was united in marriage to Frances Weiss in Glenville. Joe and Frances made their home near Glenville where Joe farmed. He enjoyed farming and always wanted to know how the crops were doing. Joe was a member of First Lutheran Church in Glenville and a member of the Elks Lodge in Albert Lea. Joe liked to go fishing and traveling. He also liked going to casinos and watching Twins games. Joe enjoyed visits from family and friends, even if he didn’t say much.
Survivors include his wife, Frances; sisters-in-law, Harriet Nelson and Sharon Weiss; nephews, Keith (Wendy) Weiss, Eugene Rasmusson, Paul Rasmusson, John (Carol) Lang, Randy Bremer and Wayne Monson; nieces, Kathy (Harold) Mehus, Barbara (Larry) Patterson, Vickie Severtson, Rebecca Perleberg, Mary Martin, Kathryn (Odean) Nelson, Wendy Bremer and Mary Ann (Rick) Hemmingson; many great-nieces and nephews; and their cat, Marshmallow.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Mary; brother, Earl Nelson; sisters, Margaret Nelson, Marian Lang and Cecile Bremer; nephews, Douglas Lang and Robert Bremer; niece, Margery Ozburn; mother and father-in-law, Bernard and Ella Weiss; brothers-in-law, Theodore Lang, Lawrence Bremer, Raymond Rasmusson and Wayne Weiss; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Rasmusson.
