Carol was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. She lived her youth around the lakes of Albert Lea and graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1964. While growing up in Albert Lea, Carol was active in Job’s Daughters. She was also a founding member of the Sunset Saddle Club and promoter of the 4-H project in Freeborn County. Carol continued her education at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where she received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in genetics. On Aug. 17, 1978, Carol earned her doctorate degree in the field of immunology.
Carol was united in marriage to Allen Halverson on June 30, 1973, at the First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, and this couple was blessed with two sons, Derek and Clinton. Their married lifetime has been spent in the rural Rembrandt area where Allen has been engaged in farming and Carol was a loving and devoted housewife and mother to her two sons. Carol was also a soybean breeder for Hy-Vigor Seeds and a horse breeder of purebred Arabian horses. She loved working with horses and at one time had as many as 50 horses in her care. While residing on the farm, she enjoyed plants, fruit trees, and her vegetable garden. Carol’s life exemplified her high regard and respect for education. She possessed a passion for learning and she had a never ceasing desire to increase her knowledge of the world around her and her special areas of study.
Carol was a member of the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Rembrandt, where she had participated in women’s Bible studies. She was also a proud member of the GJ Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood of Sioux Rapids and had served on the board of directors of the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Foundation.
